Today’s blog post is inspired by our latest Lunch n’ Learn call, where about a dozen of us gathered to dish out the secrets of crafting ironclad SEO contracts. If you missed the call, don’t worry – you’ll find the highlights right here.
In the call, we were joined by agency owners, freelancers, and people executing their own SEO. No matter what work looks like for you, making sure your contracts are as solid as your SEO skills is essential.
Many of us shared a common experience early in our careers, we trusted too much and hoped for the best without accounting for the worst. But we’ve learned… oh, have we learned!
That old saying, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” has been around for eons for good reason. Whether you’re the service provider or the one doing the buying or subcontracting, having a solid contract not only helps CYA but can get your project off to the right start and help ensure success throughout.

(In fact, as one Lunch n’ Learn participant pointed out, having a detailed proposal before you even get to the contract stage is helpful in preventing misunderstandings. That way, the client is already familiar with the terms when it comes to contract signing time.)
Contracts aren’t only about winning in court, which is a hella-expensive place to wind up. It’s about staying out of there to begin with.
Think of your contract as a guide you can refer back to as many times as needed throughout the project to make sure you’re on track. It begins as a roadmap, so both you and the client can see where you’re headed. From kickoff onward, it’s your handy GPS system, pointing you in the right direction and helping you recalculate if you get off course.
