Whether you want to write a novel, self-publish a family history, or launch a career writing for clients and publications, you’ll need a few new tools and habits to ensure your success.

In this one-day, in-person workshop, author and editor Miranda Miller opens her toolkit developed over 20 years of writing for a living and shares what you need to know to get started.

‘Writing for Fun – and Money’ takes place at The Black House at Rocklands, Berkeley.  Your workshop ticket includes a healthy lunch.

The Program

 

This info-packed, interactive workshop is capped at 12 participants so we can dig into your writing goals and what each person needs to move forward.

Each attendee will receive a workbook and is encouraged to bring a laptop to assist as we work through lessons on the writing process, finding inspiration, and the craft of writing as a business venture.

The business of writing, including copyright, contracts, licensing your work, and getting paid by clients worldwide.

Getting published, whether choosing self-publishing or pitching agents and publishers.

The Venue: The Black House at Rocklands

Rocklands Market is a 12-acre special event and multimedia studio facility in Grey County, just outside of Berkeley. Located 2 hours north of Toronto and 25 minutes from Owen Sound, the property and its wooded grounds feature meandering trails and a 2700 sq ft black steel modern barn studio. Parking space is provided.

The Black House is a spacious, modern, and fully accessible studio and event space created by chef, restaurateur, television host, author, and award-winning recording artist Roger Mooking for hosting special events like ours. It includes meeting space, a farm table dining area, full equipped kitchen, and accessible washrooms.

We’ll spend the day in the bright, airy Black House developing your writing skills and business so you’re ready to take your next steps. This could mean transitioning into a career where you get paid to write about what you know and love, improving your personal writing practice, self-publishing a book, or even getting published in top magazines and other types of publications.

Miranda Miller, Writer/Editor & Your Host

Miranda Miller is a part-time-Canadian/part-time digital nomad writer, editor, and publishing professional. She’s the author of ‘AI Content for Editors,’ co-author of ‘Ranking Factors: Fact or Fiction?’, and co-author of a series of culturally relevant adult learning resources for Native Canadian learners. A prolific ghostwriter for over 15 years, she is also published as various executives and authors in Forbes, Inc, AdWeek, and dozens of trade publications.

Miranda is the former Sr. Managing Editor of Search Engine Journal and previously served as Associate Editor of ClickZ, Content Marketing Manager at TopRank, Lead Writer at Search Engine Watch. Miranda has spoken at SES Conference, Canada’s Transliteracy Conference, and several podcasts and webinars on digital marketing and publishing. She has created curriculum for adult learning programs in Ontario, and developed and hosted private and publicly-funded workshops for many years. Her private clients have spanned small business to Fortune 50 brands and have included Rio SEO, Press Ganey, Trailer Bridge, the Province of Ontario, Quark Expeditions, WordStream Inc., 

A lifelong learner, Miranda is currently studying Anthropology at Athabasca University and recently completed ‘Leading Innovative Teams, Innovation & Entrepreneurship’ at the Stanford School of Engineering Graduate School of Business. 

Today, Miranda is the Enterprise Content Strategist at GlobalLogic, a Hitachi Company, and owner/founder of Miller Schwandt Media (formerly Miranda-Miller.com) since 2004.  She lives with her husband, sons, English Shepherd, and budgies near Georgian Bay when not traveling the world writing and trying out all the foods. She’s excited to share her knowledge and experience in the business of writing with ‘Writing for Fun – And Money!’ participants.

What should I bring?
You’ll receive a workbook to work in but might also like to have your laptop handy. This will enable you to check out tools and save web addresses in your browser as we discuss.
 
Is this property accessible?
Yes, there is wheelchair parking available, a gravel path to the Black House, and a fully accessible washroom.
 
What’s the itinerary?
Ticket-holders will receive a full itinerary by email in the weeks ahead of the event. Be prepared to arrive at 8:45am for a 9am prompt start.
 
What’s your cancellation policy?
Tickets are transferable and non-refundable. You can sell your ticket if you are unable to attend for some reason – please let me know who the new registrant is to avoid confusion. In the case of events beyond our control (fire, flood, serious illness), the event will be rescheduled at the earliest opportunity.
